The 3d model
Final model photos
The final model was built bare of cladding, to sculpturally explore the structural qualities and explore the paths through the structure. By relieving the stair flights, their twists, turns and different angles and emphasizing the platforms, this model easily illustrates the journey and atmosphere of the stairs and their relation to the surrounding trees.
sPATIAL EXPLORATION MODEL EXPERIMENT
Prior to starting to work on the concepts and designs of the observatories, we, the students, were tasked to create six models exploring different spatial qualities, to try and understand what and how physical characteristics of a built or implied space affected the perception of it. The six were: a safe space, an enclosed space, a (self)reflective space, a nurturing space, an oppressive space, a quiet space. I found this task to be rather individual, based on previous experiences and self-prefernace. Form me it had lot's to do with the materiality and journey of and through the space, as well as the complexity of its shape.
The site, warley woods, birmingham
After a week of conceptual exploration and idea generating in an imagined site with little restrictions we were introduced to the site; The Warley Woods Park, Birmingham, UK. a rather flat site with direct connection to both the street, housing, and the open space of the park. Densely cowered in trees, with a path on the site of them, this site allowed a choice of natural elements and interaction to outside spaces.
Initial sketches and the client
The initial sketch ideas was an open idea jam of imagining possible structures of different use and effect in a park environment. Some ideas of the design being carried out by the structure of the park; the trees where carried forward and developed through the design process.
At this stage the choice of client was made; the public. The challenge of this project would become designing a universal, all-appealing structure for different people.
