The Induction week is over now; the REAL studies start. Finally, it has come, finally the chance to prove myself that I can and will make the most of it. But how will it be then? We are sat in the lecture theatre, anxious. The screen of my phone has been switched on and off again and again to see what the time is. But it takes slow, calm steps, too slow for our bunch to comprehend. And when one to nine has been there, seemingly, the last ten minutes, ‘This is it.’ Richard, sat besides, says to me. History of
Modern Architecture, Culture Context
We are introduced to what, how, when and why we will do. Then we talk about Modernity, the introduction. We are shown paintings, sketches, drawings. I first look at them, I see them, see what is described in them, I think I know what they mean, what they are supposed to mean. Then we get asked questions, get given clues and our attention is drawn to certain details, or drawn away from them and we see the bigger image. After a minute or two of seeing, thinking, conversing I, and I think it is safe to say, we have a different work of art before us. Something a whole lot more challenging, unacceptable, something that questions, seeking the new of doing things. And at the same time we are exposed to the inability to let go of the traditional. Respect of tradition allows most creators to alter little in their designs, but these alterations result in a new tradition. Present refers to historical. Architecture subscribes to the same principle. Modern buildings incorporate proportion and elements of buildings built half a century ago, and that if they are a well incorporated part of the times culture is determined not by the architecture but the order of the time. Architecture on its own doesn’t posses the power to create the order, the combination of architecture and the events lived in it.

Technology, Environmental Design Strategies Room P436 full of fun physics. Split up into groups we are assigned different exercises, experiments to carry out. I start with an empty bottle, balloon and and volumes of hot and cold water. Balloon put on the bottle, put in the cold water- shrinks. Then put in hot water, the air inside expands, balloon rises. It is motivated, we laugh. Then we move on to a plastic box filled with water. We have to put a little bit of red ink in it. We fail to do that, little bit turns out to little to big. Then we add a blue colored ice cube, and watch the colors swirl around each other. The cold blue sinks, the warmer red rises. We get to go outside, to burn inflated balloons. A balloon full of air touches the candle flame and explodes. We put about a quarter mug of water in the balloon and let it meet the flame again. Now the flame hugs the bottom of the balloon but the balloon does not blow. The air warms up easily, water is a good absorbent of heat. We talk trough this later, how it translates to building design, and from this point onward I will subconsciously analyse buildings this way. | |

We get told how, when and why are we going to be taught. It is exciting and curiosity driven questions arise one after another. But those I keep to my self, those time will answer, those will result in experience, hopefully. Experience of architectural studies has begun.
